School News
We are incredibly grateful to a generous community member who donated brand-new sneakers to support our Henderson MS boys basketball players. Acts of kindness like this make a real difference for our students—boosting confidence, removing barriers, and reminding our Warriors that their community believes in them. Thank you for helping our students step onto the court feeling supported and ready to thrive!
Our 6th Grade Warriors have finished reading Percy Jackson—now it’s time to see the story come alive on the big screen! We’re excited to announce a field trip to Bowtie Cinemas on December 18, 2025.
Tickets are $18 and include a Snack Box Combo.
Space is limited to 85 students, and tickets must be purchased by December 15, 2025.
Students must have no behavior or attendance concerns in order to participate.

Join us for a special evening celebrating our YMCA–HMS scholars at the Fall Fairytale Showcase! Families are invited to enjoy student performances and honors highlighting the hard work and growth of our YMCA partnership.
The showcase will take place Monday, December 15, from 5:00–6:30 p.m. in the Henderson Middle School Auditorium. We hope to see you there as we celebrate our scholars’ achievements!
On Monday, December 15, students in grades 6–8 will participate in the Math Fall Interim Assessment during the morning (8:30–11:30 a.m.). This assessment helps teachers understand student progress and plan targeted instruction to support growth. Students should arrive on time with their Chromebooks fully charged and ready to do their best—tools and accommodations will be provided as needed.
Warriors are competing by grade level to see who can show up strong every day. After Week 1, 7th grade is in the lead with 98% attendance, followed by 6th grade at 93% and 8th grade at 91%—but anything can change!
The challenge runs through December 18, and the winning grade will earn a winter treat during lunch. Every day counts—be present, be on time, and help your grade level take the win!
As winter break approaches, excitement is high but routines can feel off, emotions can run big, and stress can sneak in for both students and families. That’s completely normal.
This is a great time to pause, reflect, and reset together.
For Students
-
Name it to tame it: If you’re feeling overwhelmed, excited, or tired, say it out loud or write it down. Naming emotions helps your brain calm down.
-
Finish strong: Do your best to complete assignments, check grades, and ask for help before break—future you will be thankful.
-
Rest counts: Sleep, laughter, movement, and quiet time are all ways your brain recharges.
Join us on Thursday, December 11 for TWO back-to-back winter events!
5–6 PM — Winter Performing Arts Showcase: Chorus + Dance students take the stage with beautiful holiday performances.
6 PM — Built on Brook Winter Festival: Arts & crafts, gingerbread house making, band/choir collaboration, and family fun!
Make it a full night of celebration with music, creativity, and community.
See you there, Warriors

Cell Phone Policy
In January 2024, to increase student engagement and safety, RPS launched a yearlong pilot of cell-phone-free policies at three middle schools and three high schools. Students at participating schools were asked to place their phones in a magnetically sealed pouch from bell to bell. Additionally, in July, Governor Glenn Youngkin signed an executive order instructing all school divisions in Virginia to adopt policies limiting cell phones in schools by January, 2025.
the new policy will go into place no later than January 1, 2025, and be implemented after the winter break. Please keep an eye out for a Divisionwide survey as well as school-level and community-based meetings throughout September and October. And, of course, feel free to email us at careandsafety@rvaschool.net with any feedback and questions.

A Pi Day Surprise!
Pi Day celebrates the mathematical number π (pi, 3.14).
This year a Pi Day celebration was organized by Henderson's 6th Grade Team. Students were sent out a survey to PIE their "favorite" teacher. After a tight race, our student leaders chose: Ms. Williams, Mr. Rodesney, Mr. Quash, and Ms. Shelton. And of course a celebration isn't truly a celebration without a special pie guest! Our 6th Grade principal Mrs. Lawson of course! Sending a huge shout out to the 6th Grade Team for their hard work, and our Pi day guest for their participation. However, none of this could have been possible without our Pi Day organizer Ms. Fells!
